LOCATION: Mediterranean Sea, off the island of Patmos
SUBJECT: Panorama of the Star Flyer
While cruise lines work the Greek Isles like cars at rush hour, Star Clippers remains a more unique adventure for those who look to experience the islands from an "eye level" perspective.
We were on the Star Flyer, a tall ship built in 1991, carrying 170 passengers, and a mast that rises 226 feet high. This ship provided a more intimate experience - with the guests getting to know other passengers, crew, and of course the ship itself on a much more personal level. The ship is motorized, but when conditions allow, the crew hoists 36,000 square feet of billowing sails to capture the Mediterranean winds.
We love all types of cruising, but for a tightly knit group of islands such as the Greek Isles, a small ship provides perspective that matches locale - and there is nothing like standing on the bow of the ship, wind quietly blowing, sails above you, without a sound to be heard except the ship cutting through the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean.
