HOTEL: Drury Inn and Suites
LOCATION: Greenville, South Carolina
SUBJECT: Exercise Room
Taking pictures of an exercise room is much like exercising itself. Be dedicated, have a game plan, and try not to sweat too much. Of course, the fun of photographing an exercise room versus exercising is that you don't need to shower afterward, and if you're doing it right, the heavy breathing is kept to a minimum.
This particular room in Greenville was a challenge in that we were dealing with three varying color temperatures. First, we had the daylight temperature from both the flash heads and the exterior light coming in through the pool area. Second, we had mercury vapor lights to contend with in the main pool area. Lastly, the fluorescent lights in the exercise area itself were another color entirely. We were able to balance these color temperatures much the same way we control our lighting - with zones.
Notice the flat screen - we handle televisions any number of ways depending on the atmosphere of the area we're shooting. Most hotel rooms we like to keep the television off but put a nice highlight on the screen. Active public areas such as lobbies and exercise rooms require a more busy feel to them - so we go with action on the television. Not major action, but usually business channels or golf... green photographs quite well and is not the visual draw that a warm color might be.
