HOTEL: Encore at the Wynn

LOCATION: Las Vegas, Nevada

SUBJECT: Living Area, Deluxe Suite

Dramatic interiors deserve a dramatic lighting scheme. Aside from the sunset in the desert sky, the lush interior provided by Encore was a great opportunity to push the limits a bit. We had all sorts of detailed textures, colors, tones, and shapes to play with, and wanted to take full advantage.

The black fabric on the sofa would have easily lost all detail with conventional lighting techniques. We decided to pool and overexpose each cushion until we were able to bring out the texture and provide that detail. We had the opposite problems with the off-white leather on the chair and ottoman. Had we gone with a general zone lighting scheme there wouldn't have been nearly the detail preserved in the whites that we have here.

The dramatic cityscape of the Vegas strip was complimented with the way we were able to capture a mood in this room, accentuated by sharp angled lighting. Notice in particular the way we brought out texture in the carpet - by placing lights behind the chair and ottoman. Without the elongated shadows coming from the chair, the area would have been weighted far too much to the left.

Lighting and color are the two biggest factors when it comes to setting mood in a still photograph, and we try to utilize these to the best of our ability.
